Querying Hierarchies With SQL Server

Last night I gave a presentation to the Lake County .NET User's Group on querying hierarchies with SQL Server. The presentation covers hierarchical schemas, and examples of different techniques to query those schemas. The techniques include enumeration with cursors, enumeration by levels, enumerated paths, and nested sets. During the second half of the meeting, people had a few “DBA” type questions for me. The question of what should be used for a clustering key was brought up. For those who would like to read a more in depth explanation, I would suggest you check out Kimberly Tripp’s blog post on the issue.
